短剑 is a double-edged short blade — distinguish from
匕首 (bǐshǒu, 'dagger/knife'), which is generally smaller and single-edged, and from
长剑 (chángjiàn, 'long sword'). In translations of European weaponry,
短剑 covers Roman gladius, medieval daggers, and Scottish dirks.
