Named after the flagship species
画眉 (Chinese hwamei, Garrulax canorus), whose eye-ring stripe makes it look 'painted.' Modern taxonomy has shuffled these birds among several families (Timaliidae, Leiothrichidae, etc.), but the Chinese name remains stable.
