Traditional Chinese
画卷 are horizontal hand scrolls
手卷 meant to be unrolled section by section in the hands, not hung on a wall. The most famous is 《
清明上河图》 (Qīngmíng Shànghé Tú, 'Along the River During the Qingming Festival') by Northern Song painter Zhang Zeduan. The figurative use — 'a magnificent
画卷' for an unfolding landscape or era — is extremely common in literary writing.
