王母娘娘 (WángmǔNiángniang): Queen Mother of the West

Originally an ancient goddess of life and death (recorded in the Classic of Mountains and Seas 山海经 as a fanged leopard-tailed figure), 王母娘娘 was tamed over centuries into the benevolent matriarch of the heavenly court. Her sacred peaches of immortality (蟠桃) grant 3,000 years of life. She rules the 瑶池 (Jade Pool) in the Kunlun Mountains.

Also called 西王母 (Xiwangmu) in older texts. 娘娘 is an imperial honorific for empresses and goddesses. In folk religion she's often paired with 玉皇大帝 (Jade Emperor) as the supreme divine couple, though classical sources treat them separately.
