Originally the capital of the Zhou-era state of
燕 (Yan). The name was reused for Beijing across many dynasties. Today it survives in
燕京啤酒 (Yanjing Beer, founded 1980) and the historical
燕京大学 (Yenching University, merged into Peking University in 1952).
