The first line of the 七步诗, which 曹植 is said to have composed within seven paces when his brother, the emperor 曹丕, threatened his life: 煮豆燃豆萁,豆在釜中泣 'they boil the beans over burning beanstalks, and in the pot the beans weep'. Beans and stalks grow from one plant, as the two brothers came from one father.
