history
As crown prince he twice called on Mencius on his way to and from Chu, and as duke he tried Mencius's ideas, from full mourning rites for his father to the 井田 'well-field' system, in which eight families farm plots around a shared ninth.
usage
Book 3 of the Mencius opens with his name and is cited in two parts, 《孟子·滕文公上》 and 《孟子·滕文公下》. The second part defines the true man: 富贵不能淫,贫贱不能移,威武不能屈 'riches cannot corrupt him, poverty cannot move him, force cannot bend him'.
