Hunan University grew out of 岳麓书院 (Yuelu Academy), founded in 976 CE during the Northern Song, one of the 'Four Great Academies' of ancient China. This lets the modern university claim an unbroken institutional lineage spanning over a millennium, longer than any Western university.

Located at the foot of 岳麓山 in Changsha, the campus is open to the public and the restored Yuelu Academy still operates on site; students literally study on 1,000-year-old scholarly ground.
