The HKD has been pegged to the US dollar (≈ 7.80 HKD/USD) since 1983 via a currency-board system run by the HKMA. Also called 港币 (gǎngbì) in everyday speech. The coins and notes are issued by three private banks (HSBC, Standard Chartered, Bank of China) — a rare arrangement worldwide.
