Painted by 张择端 in the early 12th century, the silk scroll is about five metres long. It follows the 汴河 from the countryside past the arched 虹桥 'Rainbow Bridge' into the streets of the capital 汴京, today's 开封. The original is in the Palace Museum (故宫博物院) in Beijing.
culture
It is one of the most copied paintings in China. An animated version more than a hundred metres long, with its figures walking, rowing and trading, was the centrepiece of the China Pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai.
