history
Founded in Beijing in 1911 as a school preparing students to study in the United States, paid for with returned Boxer Indemnity money. It took its name from 清华园, the former royal garden where it began. In 1956 its former president Mei Yiqi re-founded it in Hsinchu, Taiwan, as National Tsing Hua University.
culture
Usually just 清华, it is strongest in engineering and the sciences, and with 北大 it heads China's university rankings. Its motto 自强不息，厚德载物, 'strive without rest, carry all things with great virtue', comes from the Book of Changes.
