梆子 refers to the hollow wooden clappers that set the tempo — a family of northern operas (including
秦腔 and
晋剧) is named after them.
河北梆子 evolved from
秦腔 after it traveled east from Shaanxi in the late Qing and is famous for its piercing high register.
