Known as 五邑 (the 'Five Counties' of Xinhui, Taishan, Kaiping, Enping and Heshan), Jiangmen is the ancestral hometown of roughly four million overseas Chinese scattered across North America and Southeast Asia. The 开平碉楼, fortified European-styled towers built with remittance money in the 1920s, became a UNESCO site in 2007.
