Wuhan is a sub-provincial city formed by the 1927 merger of three towns — Wuchang (
武昌), Hankou (
汉口), and Hanyang (
汉阳) — which sit at the junction of the Yangtze and Han rivers. The Wuchang Uprising of 1911 started here and ended 2,000 years of imperial rule. Wuhan is also famous for the Yellow Crane Tower (
黄鹤楼) and, more recently, as the first city hit by COVID-19 in 2019–2020.
