Originally a Buddhist term (Sanskrit iṣṭadevatā, the 'tutelary deity'). In modern internet slang it pairs with 分身 (fēnshēn, 'separate body / avatar / alt account') — 本尊 means the original real person, 分身 the side-account or stand-in.
