Cao's family, once wealthy Qing imperial servants, was ruined when he was young — he wrote
红楼梦 in poverty on Beijing's western hills. He completed only the first 80 chapters; the final 40 were written by Gao E (
高鹗) from Cao's notes. An entire field of scholarship —
红学 (Redology) — is devoted to the novel.
