Used mainly in Christian (基督教) contexts to translate Anglican matins or Catholic lauds. In Chinese Buddhism and Daoism the parallel is 早课 ('morning lesson'); in Islam it's 晨礼 (fajr). All three describe the same daybreak slot, but the religious vocabulary doesn't cross over.
