history

It was formed in October 1937 from Red Army guerrillas who had stayed behind in eight southern provinces, and fought along the Yangtze while the 八路军 fought in the north. In January 1941 Nationalist troops attacked its headquarters column in southern Anhui, the 皖南事变, and its commander 叶挺 was taken prisoner.
