Literally "bull-fighting dog" — the breed group originates from 17th-19th century European dogs bred for the blood sport of bull-baiting (斗牛). Today 法国斗牛犬 (French bulldog) and 英国斗牛犬 (English bulldog) are popular urban pets in China.
