Tips

history
Launched by Mao Zedong (毛泽东 Máo Zédōng) in May 1966 and effectively ending with his death in 1976. Universities closed, intellectuals were persecuted, the Red Guards (卫兵 Hóngwèibīng) attacked the 'Four Olds' ( sìjiù: old customs, culture, habits, ideas). Officially labeled by the CCP in 1981 as 'an internal disorder caused by Mao's mistakes'.
register
A politically sensitive topic in mainland China. The full form 文化大革命 is more formal/historical; 文革 is the everyday abbreviation. Heavy censorship online means oblique references like 十年 ('those ten years') are common.
