毛泽东 Máo Zédōng) in May 1966 and effectively ending with his death in 1976. Universities closed, intellectuals were persecuted, the Red Guards (
红卫兵 Hóngwèibīng) attacked the 'Four Olds' (
四旧 sìjiù: old customs, culture, habits, ideas). Officially labeled by the CCP in 1981 as 'an internal disorder caused by Mao's mistakes'.
