Emperor Wen (
汉文帝, r. 180–157 BC) and his son Emperor Jing (
汉景帝, r. 157–141 BC) cut the land tax, eased punishments and avoided costly wars, and the full granaries paid for Emperor Wu's campaigns that followed. It is the first of the good reigns later held up as models, along with
贞观之治 of the Tang.
