Named after Chen Duxiu's (
陈独秀) 1917 manifesto 《
文学革命论》 in 《
新青年》 magazine. It rejected classical literary forms in favor of the vernacular, and prepared the ground for Lu Xun's 《
狂人日记》 (1918), the first modern Chinese short story written entirely in
白话文.
