The Yi are one of the largest of China's 55 officially recognized minorities (~9 million people) with their own syllabic script (彝文) and the famous 火把节 (Torch Festival) held on the 24th day of the 6th lunar month. 凉山 (Liangshan) in Sichuan is the largest Yi autonomous prefecture.
