庄

Top-left shelter radical - a wall and roof meeting at a corner, a roof-line with one side wall. The indexing radical, putting 庄 in the family of large covered places: 店 shop, 库 storehouse, 床 bed, 庙 temple. 庄 is a manor or village, a clustered set of structures under shared authority.

Inside 土 - pictograph of a mound of earth rising from the ground line. Carries the meaning of settled ground: a 庄 is a building rooted to its soil, a country estate or hamlet. The simplified 庄 replaced traditional 莊 (with 艹 grass and 壯 inside), PRC reform reducing it to this cleaner roof-and-earth picture.
