About Timur

1336–1405 · 君主 monarch

Turco-Mongol conqueror who built an empire from his capital Samarkand across Central Asia and Persia, sacking Delhi and Baghdad. He ruled as emir, never taking the title khan, and died while marching to attack Ming China.

帖木儿 renders his Chagatai name Temür, 'iron'. An arrow wound left him lame, hence the Persian Timur-i Lang, 'Timur the Lame', which became Tamerlane in English and 跛子帖木儿 in Chinese.
