The 己 (jǐ, 'self,' also the sixth Heavenly Stem) stands in for the number 6 in organic chemistry naming — so 己二酸 = six-carbon diacid = adipic acid (HOOC-(CH2)4-COOH). The same 己 appears in 己酸 (hexanoic acid) and 己烷 (hexane).
