Self-component, 巨 is essentially atomic. The original pictograph showed a person holding a large carpenter's L-shaped square; the figure later dropped away, leaving today's 4-stroke frame. Because 'great square' was a literal big tool, 巨 generalised to 巨大 and 巨人. Indexed under Kangxi #22 匚 via the open-box silhouette.
