Confusingly,
熊猫 (xióngmāo) by itself usually means giant panda — but
小熊猫 ('little panda-bear') is a different species, the red panda. Despite the name, red pandas are not bears at all; they're in their own family Ailuridae. Western 'panda' as a word actually came from the red panda first.
