He served the small state of 荆南 on the middle Yangtze under three generations of its rulers, and in 963 talked the last of them into surrendering to the Song, which made him a prefect. More than sixty of his ci are in the anthology 《花间集》 'Among the Flowers', and he is counted among its leading poets.
