The name comes from the star 婺女, the 'Maiden' lunar mansion, which old star-field geography set over this region. It lives on in 婺剧, the local opera, and 婺江, the river through Jinhua.

Not 梧州 in Guangxi, which sounds almost the same. 婺 is fourth tone.
