culture
24th and final solar term, around January 20. Despite the name, it is often not the actual coldest day — 小寒 (Lesser Cold, around January 5) sometimes is. The pair 小寒/大寒 closes out the winter half of the calendar and leads directly into 立春 (Start of Spring).
usage
A common saying is 小寒大寒一团 — 'Lesser Cold, Great Cold: cold enough to huddle into a ball.' Culturally associated with preparing for Spring Festival.
