usage
The district is officially 大兴区, and Beijing Daxing International Airport, opened in 2019, is usually just 大兴机场. The verb sense, written 大兴, is formal: it is best known from the chengyu 大兴土木 'to build on a grand scale'.
history
Emperor Wen of Sui built his new capital in 582 and named it 大兴 after the title he had held before taking the throne, Duke of Daxing. The Tang kept the city and called it 长安.
