唸 is a variant of
念 (niàn) specifically in the sense of 'to read aloud / to recite.' In Taiwan,
唸書 (niànshū) means 'to study/go to school,' whereas on the mainland,
念书 serves the same purpose. The character
唸 is more common in traditional script contexts.
