Found in the Ming vernacular collection 《醒世恒言》 by Feng Menglong. By then already a set phrase used in dialogue to describe a character stunned into silence.

Implies being silenced by a strong argument or undeniable fact - not just quietness. Often follows /使 + person or appears after 一问/一说 constructions.
