history

In July 1921 the CCP's 1st National Congress had to flee Shanghai when police raided the meeting. The delegates relocated to a pleasure boat (红船, the 'Red Boat') on Jiaxing's Nanhu to finish their founding session — making Nanhu a major Party pilgrimage site. Many other Chinese cities (Wuhan, Tangshan, Changchun, etc.) also have a 南湖.
