Three distinct referents share this name: (1) Beihai Park (
北海公园) in Beijing — an imperial garden centered on a lake just northwest of the Forbidden City, dating to the Liao dynasty; (2) Beihai City (
北海市), a port in Guangxi on the Gulf of Tonkin; (3) the North Sea between Britain and continental Europe (
北海石油 = North Sea oil). Classical texts also used
北海 for Lake Baikal.
