Nicknamed 军神 ('God of War'). Lost his right eye in battle and famously refused anaesthesia during surgery to protect his brain — the doctor counted 72 cuts. Partnered with 邓小平 in the 刘邓大军 that broke through to the Dabie Mountains in 1947, a turning point in the civil war.
