几何 is a Ming dynasty phonetic transliteration of the Greek word 'geometria', introduced by the Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci (
利玛窦) and Xu Guangqi (
徐光启) when they translated Euclid's Elements (
几何原本) in 1607 — one of the most significant cultural exchanges in Chinese intellectual history.
