Formal humble term used only in your own speech about your own deceased father — never about someone else's. The
先 (xiān, prior/preceding) prefix marks the deceased: paired terms include
先母 (xiānmǔ, late mother) and
先祖 (xiānzǔ, deceased ancestors). Polite alternative:
家父 (jiāfù) for a living father.
