Single ideographic unit. Heavily simplified from 習 — 羽 (two wings) over 白 — the picture of a young bird flapping repeatedly to learn flight, hence practice, habit. The 1956 reform kept only one stylised wing-shape. Indexed under Kangxi #15 冫 (bīng, ice) by tradition via the two-dot pattern.
