history

It began as an earlier Ming novel that 冯梦龙 rewrote in 108 chapters as 新列国志. In the Qing, 蔡元放 revised it, added a commentary and gave it its present title. It covers more than five hundred years, from the end of the Western Zhou to the Qin unification in 221 BC.

usage

It keeps closer to the historical record than 三国演义, so readers often use it as a way into the period. Episodes behind idioms such as 卧薪尝胆 and 完璧归赵 are told here at length.
