The second line of the autumn poem in
李白's
子夜吴歌, after
长安一片月 'a sheet of moonlight over Chang'an'. Women beat newly woven cloth on a stone block, the
砧, to soften it before sewing winter clothes for husbands at the frontier, so the sound became the sound of autumn longing. The poem ends asking when the frontier will be at peace and the husbands can come home.
