On the night of 7 July 1937, a Japanese soldier went briefly missing during exercises near Wanping, outside Beiping. Japan demanded entry to search; Chinese forces refused. Skirmishes at 卢沟桥 (the Marco Polo Bridge) escalated into full-scale war, beginning the 抗日战争 (War of Resistance).
