Tips

history
In the 史记, plain 高祖 always means 刘邦, as in the chapter title 高祖本纪. Strictly his temple name was 太祖 and his posthumous title 高皇帝, but Sima Qian's usage stuck, and 汉高祖 is how everyone knows him.
usage
As a kinship word it is formal, found mainly in genealogies; speech says 高祖父. The ladder runs 祖父 (grandfather), 曾祖父 (great-grandfather), 高祖父 (great-great-grandfather).
