The English word 'kaolin' comes from
高岭 (Gāolǐng, lit. 'high ridge'), a hill near Jingdezhen in Jiangxi where this fine white clay was first mined for porcelain. The name traveled with the material along trade routes to Europe in the 17th–18th centuries.
