culture
The story goes that when the young 白居易 called on him in 长安, Gu looked at the name 居易, 'living easily', and joked that rice was dear in the capital and living there was not easy. Then he read the lines beginning 离离原上草 and said that a man who wrote like this would live there with ease.
history
The idiom 一见如故, 'like old friends at first meeting', is first recorded of the minister 李泌 meeting him. With Li Bi's backing he held a court post, but his mocking verse made enemies; after Li Bi died he was sent away from the capital, and he spent his last years as a Taoist recluse.
