The name is Mongolian (Ordos = 'palaces / royal tents' — where Genghis Khan's shrine is kept). Became world-famous around 2010 as China's most notorious 'ghost city' — Kangbashi New District was built for a million residents during the coal boom but stood largely empty. Also a major cashmere brand.
