逐 = chase / pursue, 退 = retreat. Together: "chase-into-retreat" — you actively push something back. The same 逐 turns up in 驱逐 (expel) and 追逐 (chase).

Written register, common in military and historical writing. Spoken Mandarin tends to use 击退 (jītuì) or 赶走 (gǎnzǒu).
