The traditional 花轿 ('flower sedan') - a richly decorated red palanquin carried by four or eight bearers - was the ceremonial vehicle for a bride being delivered to her groom's home. The phrase 八抬大轿 ('8-bearer big sedan') is still used metaphorically: 'I wouldn't go even if you sent an 8-man palanquin to fetch me' = absolutely refusing.
memory
轿 = 车 (vehicle radical) + 乔 (tall) - a 'tall vehicle' carried up high on shoulders. 轿子 also lives on in the modern term 轿车 ('sedan car') - passenger cars borrowed the name from the old palanquin.
