grammar

败 ("be defeated") + 者 ("-er, the one who"). The 者 suffix is the classical-derived agent nominaliser, common in formal/literary Chinese: 胜者 (winner), 败者 (loser), 强者 (the strong), 弱者 (the weak). In casual speech, 输家 (shūjiā) is more common for "loser".
